The Stanley Cup will be in the arena to hand to Sidney Crosby in the event of a Pittsburgh Penguins victory tonight, so we thought we’d profile the grad who mixed the Rogers Hockey Night in Canada theme today. Jon Bartel ’05 is a mixer, sound designer, recordist and editor based in Toronto. He started his career at CTV/Bellmedia and has worked on numerous shows airing on Discovery, TSN, Muchmusic, Food Network and Sportsnet. Jon’s work includes mixing and and sound design for all NHL-related material on Rogers Sportsnet and Hockey Night in Canada, and mixing for Toronto Raptors “Open Gym” for MLSE and Buy It, Fix It, Sell It on Shaw.
Jon said, “OIART is the reason I get to wake up every day and do what I love. I still, almost daily, have a moment where I stop and realize how fortunate I am to be able to do this work for a living. To be creative, and continually pursue new ways of using audio to help tell the story. Unreal!!I really believe that the true value at OIART lives in its people. To learn from a group of teachers who share the same passion and energy for all things audio as I did… that was a revelation to me. I had never been in an environment like that before. It was fantastic.
I run into a lot of grads from any and all audio schools throughout my day to day, especially on the bigger live events where the crews are huge (MMVAs, WeDay, sporting events, etc.). I can’t speak to the quality of other schools, but I can certainly say that, as a rule, you can usually pick out an OIART grad from the pack in relatively short order. I can’t think of a better testament to the quality of what you guys do than that.”
