Nick Civiero (’11) is an assistant engineer at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver. Owned by Canadian Music legend Bryan Adams, the studio has recorded albums by AC/DC, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Hedley, Metallica, Michael Buble, Nickelback, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, R.E.M., Rush, Sarah McLachlan, Simple Plan and Slayer amongst hundreds of others. After graduating from OIART’s audio and music production course, Nick was never afraid to get his hands dirty on the job. His first job out of school was a custodian at a cathedral, but “due to my educational background they contracted me to mix front of house for their yearly play on my first day on the job!”
Along the way, Nick helped build Vancouver’s Monarch Studios, worked in arena setup at BC Place, was a classroom Audio Technician at the Vancouver Film School, and an Assistant Engineer at Garth Richardson’s The Farm Studios. In addition to his current work at The Warehouse, he still records orchestras on location in his spare time. Nick clearly loves his work.
He says, “I think I learned as much as one possibly can in a year while I was at OIART. I knew next to nothing about audio going in and I came out knowing enough to set things in motion towards my dream job. Any audio school can teach you the fundamentals of recording, but OIART does something really special. It teaches you how to be the kind of person that people will want to have around their studio long enough to master the craft.”
