John Hunter - Alumni Spotlight
Jeremy Alves | April 20, 2017
After graduating from OIART in 1999, John started his career as an audio-visual technician in Toronto’s SkyDome Hotel. He went on to freelance at various venues such as the Royal York Hotel, the King Edward Hotel and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. In the summer of 2003, John took part in the grand opening of the Distillery District as a front-of-house mixer for many of Toronto’s top jazz, Latin and R&B performers.
Three years later, John began to work as an audio technician at Air Canada Centre for the Toronto Raptors in-game presentation. He went on to mix his first pre-game show for the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he experienced the thrill of mixing a live television broadcast. In 2010, John became a full-time broadcast audio engineer for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. His first NHL broadcast in a Dome Productions mobile in 2011 was a challenging opportunity, but he has since honed his craft to mix countless Leafs, Raptors and TFC broadcasts across North America.
Today, John mixes every Raptors home game on TSN and Sportsnet. He even travels with the team during playoffs to ensure cohesion between broadcasts.
“OIART’s fundamental approach to audio is engrained into every mix that I do. Whether it’s music, sports or speech, high-quality audio comes from critical listening and precise manipulation of technology—these are the skills that give OIART grads an edge.”
