Ian Trace graduated from OIART’s audio and music production school in 2012, and is currently the Electronic Systems Specialist at the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. After OIART, he returned to Edmonton AB where he became the Assistant Head of Audio at the Citadel Theatre for two years. Looking to overhaul their audio and video systems, the Alberta government discovered Ian and his diverse skill set on Linkedin and quickly reached out. His responsibilities now include the installation, configuration, maintenance and operational support of all audio, video and broadcast equipment to support the operation of the Legislative chamber; 4 committee rooms, a media room and various hospitality & meeting spaces around the campus. He still manages to find time to work as a Stage Hand with IATSE local 210, production manager for the Edmonton International Jazz Festival and as a Freelance AV operator and technician for various local AV companies.
Ian said, “I came to OIART already having previous audio education and audio industry work experience. My goal was to really solidify my understanding of the fundamentals of audio systems and theory – OIART did that for me and more! The combination of an immersive environment, great faculty and fellow students helped to re-ignite my passion for all things audio. In addition to giving students a solid understand of theory and practical experience, the program shows how the different areas of audio (recording, live, sound design, acoustics) relate to one another and work together. I use skills from each of these areas every day in all the work I do. I am thankful for the relationships I built with the staff and my fellow students while I was at OIART. I will carry those and skills I learned with me throughout my career. I am proud to be an OIART graduate.”
